"Barbara Koenen: The War Rug Project"
5 min. 55 sec.

Barbara Koenen [pronounced 'KEN-en] shows us her work based on the rugs Afghan women wove, depicting the wars in their country. Koenen creates installations copying the rugs, but made out of spices and, mimicking land mines, fireworks that explode when you step on them. At the end of their lives as installations, the 'rugs' are printed onto canvas, each successive print helping obliterate the original war image.
She says the work is partly a way to make sure that women are included when we talk about war and peace.

This was shot in her Hyde Park studio, which smelled like a Silk Road bazaar!
